Mothballing
of the U.S,Navy cargo shipp USS Betelgeuse AK260at the Phildelpjia
Naval Shipyard in Pennsylvina usinf a newly developed preservation
method, circa 1971/The ship's deck, topside equipment and
superstructure were completly coveredfrom bow to stern by a single ,
custuom engineerered, air-supported plastic structure within which
dehumidified air was circulated. The advantage of this method was that
significat time was saved is resctivating a ship to full operational
staus. The new process required minimum dismantiling of a ship's
topside equipmentfor stowage below deck.Winces, controllers, directors
and othe topside gear remained in place.
